Have you ever wanted to live in a world without chaos? A place where anyone can live the dream and make a world of their own creation? Look no further than TomoDachi Life: Living the Dream. This is the newest installment in the TomoDachi series, and it offers new updates from the previous versions to better reflect life in 2026.
The game has been released on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 systems as of April 16. This review was written before the release.
The first TomoDachi Collection game, released in 2009, was exclusive to Japan, but its sequel, TomoDachi Life, was released in America in 2014. These are life simulation games based on Nintendo Miis, which are players’ virtual avatars. In this game, the player decides how they want their Miis to live and what kind of life they lead.
Miis function as if they were real: speaking, dressing themselves, eating, socially interacting, being employable, building friendships, relationships and even a community. Even when players aren’t playing, Miis still live their lives as if the game were functioning.
Now, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream adds more character customization than the previous games, allowing players to make their Miis feel more connected to them. For the first time, TomoDachi allows for a non-binary gender option. Afterward, players can adjust their height and body type. Players can now choose which ears they want featured on their Mii, and new hairstyles have been added to better represent players of all ethnicities.
Additionally, new personality and sexuality options are available for the Miis, which help players find other Miis to build kinship and relationships with. Depending on the capabilities of the Miis, players can even live together with different Mii characters they’ve created on their island. Up to eight Miis can live in one house, so players can go wild with decorating the interior as well as the exterior of the house.
At first, the island will seem deserted. As more Miis are created to the player's liking, the island will start to feel pretty lively, but it's not over yet. This means the player will shape the island to their liking by placing decorative items such as benches, plants, trees and more throughout it.
Players can also move houses, shops and other buildings around, or even expand the areas of land, creating a lively place for Miis to thrive in. Players can use their creativity to create towns, neighborhoods, shopping centers and more from their imagination.
Mii characters are designed to function as if they were real. Little quirks are tiny habits they have that allow them to be more expressive, such as how they enjoy their food, socializing skills, special phrases, wiping away sweat and tossing and turning while sleeping.
So for those wanting to experience a world with endless possibilities, creativity and social activity, TomoDachi Life: Living the Dream is out now.
